Silent Voices

Silent Voices juxtaposes work from HKBU students and established art practitioners to explore and highlight fragments of untold stories from underrepresented groups in Hong Kong.

This exhibition stems from a GE course An Introduction to Gender, Class and Race offered this fall by the Department of History at Hong Kong Baptist University. Students were provided with an opportunity to learn about the work of art practitioners such as Chan Sai-lok, Ivy Ma, and Yuenjie Maru and how they transform an idea into a work of art. In highlighting the interconnectedness of gender, class, race, and other categories, students also collected firsthand material and brought oral history elements into their interpretations. All these activities engaged the students in reflecting on individuals or groups in Hong Kong that are marginalized due to ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, occupation, disability, old age, poverty and indigenous heritage.

Silent Voices was curated by Chen Fong-fong, co-presented by the HKBU Department of History and 1a Space, and sponsored by the Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation.
