Secret is one of a set of four works from the series Exercise Book. As a fragment from the set of words Important, Secret, Personal, and Statement, this piece demonstrates Chan’s persistent exploration of the possibilities of painting. The intense red, the manipulation of materials and techniques, and the artist’s signature combination of text and image convey a sense of delicate intimacy, queerness, and sophistication. Chan Sai-lok is an artist, art critic, and writer based in Hong Kong. Chan has won the UOB Art in Ink Award and he was shortlisted for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize.
