The 19th flight 第十九次飛行

Graphite on paper

2018

@ Ivy Ma

A prolific artist from Hong Kong, Ivy Ma explores found materials and images that intersect with spatial and temporal situations, in order to reveal emotions and desires, as well as collective memories and traumas. This small piece is from a set of some nineteen works on paper entitled The 19th Flight. The oval shape in monochrome graphite expands almost to the edges of the picture frame, reminiscent of the abstract form of an airplane window. This subtle, minimal form of expression challenges conceptions of the borders of surfaces. Ma studied fine art in Hong Kong and the UK, and she has held a number of solo exhibitions in Hong Kong. Her series Last Year (2015) was collected by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2020.
